Problem
Embracing randomness was my brief for my project and so I decided to look into embracing randomness in 3 elements: people, music, and biology. Embracing randomness in people led me to learn about chance theory, butterfly effect, Gambler’s fallacy. Embracing randomness in Music led me to look at chance music, Algorithmic music (use of code to generate music). Embracing randomness in Biology led me to learn more about Arrhythmia (Irregular rhythm of your heart beat).
Atrial fibrillation(AFIB) is the most common heart rhythm disturbance, affecting around 1.4 million people in the UK.
How can we embrace randomness in People + Arrhythmia + music?
Solution
Introducing Minim: Your Personal Beat-Driven Playlist Companion
Minim is an app that helps users understand what song matches their unique heartbeat. Minim is meant to educate people about their heart health through music. Say goodbye to generic playlists and hello to a symphony that moves to your heartbeat—download Minim today and let the music flow with your pulse! In partnership with Spotify.
Research
To gain a better understanding of people’s behaviours and motivations, I started by looking at already-existing heart projects, contacted the AFIB community on Reddit, and posted a questionnaire asking individuals to share their Journeys.
Method 1 Quantitative Survey
Method 2 Qualitative Survey
I reached out to the Reddit community and started a discussion in the AFIB group to learn more and gain an outsider’s
perspective. This was intriguing because individuals participated and were eager to offer their opinions and experiences
about my project. I also discussed the topic of my project, and I received several comments regarding my app idea as well as some suggestions.
I narrowed it down to three broad questions that I thought would give me the most insight into the problem space.
Initial Insights
Multiple People didn’t realize they had irregular heartbeats and didn’t expect to get diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation at a young age.
Interviewees talked about how challenging it was to implement lifestyle changes into their life.
Interviewees did not think stress and anxiety to lead to such severe diagnoses.
Journey Map
Based upon data from Reddit surveys and user reviews, I organized my observations and categorized them as user persona which led to creating a journey map. This helped me expose pain points and areas for improvement in the app along the entire user journey. It also helped spark discussions to help close knowledge gaps and acted as a catalyst for idea sharing and generation between the team and stakeholders.
Goals
My research shows that Atrial Fibrillation affects 60+ adults but according to the research from Reddit, adults who are younger than 50 seem to be affected. I want to create a customized experience for adults from ages 20 – 40 and make tracking heart health fun and educational.
